We hope you all had a great Thanksgiving holiday! We definitely enjoyed some MUCH needed family time and R&R around here! Speaking of family, I’m excited to share a really cute engagement session with a splash of family portraiture. We recently photographed hubby-and-wife-to-be Chris and Mabel along with Mabel’s daughter, Annie! We started at Capitol Garage, one of their favorite hang out spots. We always love it there, it’s so colorful!
Then we headed to Capitol Park, which was lookin’ beautiful with all of the fall colors.
Isn’t Annie adorable?
Love this wall! The way that Chris looks at Mabel…I’m telling you, only she can get him to smile like that!! Ah, love.
Check out this cute rock that Annie found by the railroad tracks!
This bike rack that had been knit-bombed was really neat.
Congratulations Chris and Mabel! Your wedding in July is going to be so much fun!
We were so honored to photograph the wedding of our good friends, Marcus and Cristina on 11-11-11! They definitely did not let the most popular wedding date of 2011 go to waste. What an amazingly fun party with lots of friends and family! Here are a few teasers from the wedding day. The last one is a new favorite of mine! Congratulations Marcus and Cristina — More coming soon!
Okay folks, get ready for a ton of pretty photos and a very cute story. Don and Emily are adorable! They were married in Watsonville, CA at Pajaro Dunes, where Emily’s family has been vacationing since she was young. I just posted their camping-beach themed wedding invitations we designed, so do check them out! Don and Emily did an amazing job planning their wedding, and that is because they are amazing people! Every detail was heartfelt and adorable. What made the day even more special is the fact that Don and Emily are expecting! I remember Don being so happy that their baby was there to share the day with them. We are sooooo happy for them!
Never have you seen a girl so happy. Emily’s joy was so infectious!
I love that there were Emily’s family member’s wedding portraits displayed at the condo.
Geoff got to hang out with the guys as they got all dressed up.
Because Don and Emily are so awesome, they decided to do a first look! It was such a wonderful emotional moment.
What a gentleman!!
This Eucalyptus grove was amazing.
Oh Emily. Isn’t she just lovely?
We took a few group photos then off to the ceremony at the beach!
I dont think there was a dry eye on the whole beach! It was a really touching ceremony.
I really love what they did for the sand pouring ceremony. Don and Emily had their mothers bring sand from their respective homes: Lake Michigan and the California coast, and that is what they mixed!
Emily’s mom kept saying that pelicans at a wedding were good luck!
Emily was determined to splash around in the ocean.
Such a tender moment. They were both so happy their baby was there with them. They are going to make amazing parents!
The way these two light up when they see each other is so inspiring.
Another super cute moment I have to share–Don kept getting excited about a “castle” he had seen earlier and really wanted to take pictures with it. I wasn’t aware of and castles in Watsonville, but was blown away when we turned the corner to see this awesome beach house. The owners just so happened to be on their balcony and said Don and Emily could go up for some photos! It was so neat!
Waving like royalty in their “castle”. Adorable.
Then it was time to eat and party with friends and family! The reception details were so stinkin’ cute! I love the color combo they chose.
“Love Don, Emily, and Baby” Awwwwwww…
I love that they incorporated the red lantern from their wedding invitations into their decor. The camping pots were a cute touch too! And the flowers – all DIY!
For wedding favors, Don and Emily gave their guests colorful beach towels!
I am telling you, Don is a CATCH! On the inside of Emily’s ring he had a ruby placed, which he said was a little piece of his heart. Are you kidding me!? So charming.
One of the highlights of the evening was announcing the baby’s gender during the reception – a girl! Her name is going to be Hurley Roux, I love that!
Their cake topper was almost 100 years old! I believe it had been through 4 generations of weddings!
Near the entrance of the resort, we had spotted the incredible field of yellow flowers, so we couldn’t help but steal Don and Emily away from their reception for a few minutes and make these photos. I love them so much! And Don and Emily are awesome for being down!
What beach wedding would not be complete without a bonfire down on the beach! The evening concluded with friends and family cuddling in the sand and making s’mores. A perfect ending to an amazing day!
Congratulations again to Don and Emily. We feel so grateful to have experienced their wedding day with them. We are sooooo happy for them and their growing family!
Don and Emily are such a wonderful couple. From the moment we saw them as a bridesmaid and guest at Matt and Diane’s wedding, we knew their love was something special. When we met with Emily and she told us about their own wedding, we were thrilled at the opportunity to be a part of it and get to know them better. Don and Emily were planning a beach wedding at Parajo Dunes, a resort along the Monterey Bay in Watsonville, CA. Lots of family and friends were renting condos and beach homes and even camping for the wedding weekend. Emily and Don really wanted to incorporate both a camping and beach theme, along with their color palette of navy with bright oranges and yellows. We created lots of cute camping-based illustrations for a fun, casual look. Let’s start with their Save the Date!
My favorite part is the old-stlye lantern with the heart flame. It was carried across through all of the design. Emily said it inspired some of the decor at the wedding, which you’ll see in their wedding post coming up next.
When it came time to do the wedding invitation, we went a little more formal, but still kept all the fun, colorful elements. We designed the invitation, RSVP, envelope liners, and super cute map.
“Can we get a witness?” Love it! We did a postcard RSVP.
I really love the map!
Here are some close-ups of the illustrations. Love the vintage camper!
This was a really fun suite to design! Stay tuned for Don and Emily’s wedding photography post later today!
WOW. We are kind of reeling from everything. Geoff and I have been on cloud nine the past few days. Before this week, our trip to the Up replica house was just a fun and (BEYOND) amazing memory that Geoff and I were lucky enough to share. Since we posted about it, the photos have been spreading like wildfire! We are so thankful for all of the kind comments from friends and strangers all over the world! It’s been popping up all over the internet. One of the coolest moments was when we saw that the director of Toy Story 3, Lee Unkrich, tweeted about our shoot! The Daily Mail, a UK news site, even wrote a very sweet article about it: read it here! We sent Bangerter Homes a little album of the photos from the shoot and they put it in the Up House for all the visitors to see! Neat!
More than anything, we get such a thrill that our photo shoot has brought joy and happiness to other people. If just one other person got a smile from it, that makes me happy. 🙂 I thought it would be fun to share a little behind the scenes!
These are from when we were planning our Carl and Ellie costumes. (These two are from my iPhone, sorry for the bad quality!)
Creating our handmade adventure book.
Sewing my yellow dress in the middle of the night before we left!
I wrote in the original post that hair and makeup was done by Enizio Hair and Makeup Artistry. Truth be told, I rarely step foot in a salon (I’ve been cutting my own hair for almost 5 years now) and I have NEVER had my makeup professionally done (yup, I did my own wedding makeup!). So it was really fun to splurge a little had get my hair and makeup done at a studio!
I’m kind of nervous to post this before and after photo, but I wanted to show you how awesome a job the girls at Enizio did! It was a really great experience. They even styled Geoff’s hair too! (His Carl haircut was done by Paper Doll Smile in Sacramento.)
We got there early to blow up all those colorful balloons.
Here we are with our photographers, Wendy and Tyler of Blue Lily Photography! It really was an honor to finally meet these incredible human beings. You must check out their blog and thier amazing work. I am truly envious of their travel-crazy, photographing, nomadic lifestyle.
Geoff and I post-shoot in a state of bliss. We were on top of the world!
We waved goodbye to the Up house and continued on our road trip in utter happiness. Off to another adventure!
OH my GOODNESS! I am SO excited to finally share these amaz-azing photos! They are being featured on Rock ‘n’ Roll Bride today (yay!), but I wanted to share them here plus a little more of the story as well! When Geoff and I heard about the Up house replica being built in Herriman, Utah, we got a crazy little idea to drive out from California and take photos there. We are huge Pixar fanatics and absolutely LOVE the movie Up. We watched it the day it came out and we were engaged at the time. So watching the “Married Life” sequence at the beginning of the film really hit home (read: bawling in the theatre). It still makes me tear up every time I watch it. So when we heard about the house, we knew it was a long shot but called up the folks at Bangerter Homes, the creators and builders of the Up house and asked if we could do a photo shoot there in honor of our second wedding anniversary. The team at Bangerter Homes is seriously amazing, because they sad “Yes!” We were thrilled! We later found out that we were the only ones that were able to do a photo shoot inside the house. We felt so special!
With less than a month to plan the shoot and trip, we made many-a-trip to Goodwill (I adore thrifting!) to get the perfect costumes. We have admired Blue Lily Photography for some time now, so we were overjoyed that they could be in Utah and could be our photographers! They did such and incredible job. So, so amazing. Let’s get to it! Here we are as young Carl and Ellie.
I gotta say, wearing overalls is pretty awesome.
The details and work put in to making the house a perfect replica was absolutely amazing. We had so much fun recreating scenes from the movie and making some of our own!
This next set is in the nursery inside the house. I absolutely ADORE the mural that is painted on the wall. This makes us so excited about starting a little family of our own…
Honestly, if this house was in California I would want to buy it. It’s like my dream home! So colorful, fun, quirky, bright, and the KITCHEN! That blue stove had a fridge dishwasher, and microwave to match.
I did a few craft projects for the shoot, one of which was creating our very own adventure book from scratch. I’m excited to fill the pages with all of our adventures and memories, starting with this shoot!
Of course, our photo shoot would not have been complete without BALLOONS!
See my yellow dress? I couldn’t find the perfect bright Ellie dress, so I decided to make one! At 5 in the morning the day before we left, haha! It is sewn from a thrifted vintage bedsheet. I had so much fun making and wearing it!
This one is one of my favorites…
Geoff and I scoped out the perfect hill to re-create Carl and Ellie’s picnic scene. I wish I could go have a picnic here every day.
We brought my picnic basket from home and used my great grandma’s vintage camera.
Grape soda, of course!
Back to the house! Man oh man, did the team at Bangerter Homes do an amazing job creating this house. Here are a few of the details.
Sigh, my man is so handsome.
There were so many meaningful things about this photo shoot. Carl and Ellie’s love is such an inspiration to us as a married couple, and we are excited about having adventures and growing old together. The part where we were “old” Carl and Ellie was pretty emotional.
The only way to describe being able to be in that house, sitting in Carl and Ellie’s chairs next to my love, was surreal and amazing. We literally felt like we were in the movie and we were both just so amazed we were able to do this.
I know I have said “amazing” a lot in this post, but that is because it was! Geoff and I now carry with us SUCH a wonderful memory of our time at the Up House. It was truly unforgettable and an experience we will treasure throughout our lives together. Thank you SOOOOOOO much to the folks at Bangerter Homes for making this all possible! Thank you to Wendy and Tyler from Blue Lilly Photography! You were so fun and the photos are amazing. My hair and makeup was beautifully done by Enizio Hair and Makeup Artistry in Utah. Thank you!!
Get ready for some pretty pictures of some awesome people! We spent last weekend in LA to photograph Claire and Doug for their engagement session. We had so much fun! Claire and Doug met each other in when they were both going to law school in Chicago and now they are living in beautiful Los Angeles. We are super excited to be traveling to Chicago next year to photograph their wedding! We had a blast chasing around Montana Avenue and the neighborhood and cute shops before heading to a gorgeous hike where Doug proposed! We started at a favorite spot of Claire and Doug’s, an awesome place called Father’s Office (seriously, amazing burgers!!)
Claire! Those eyes! Isn’t she stunning?
We were so fortunate to get some AMAZING light that day, which was sandwiched between two very rainy, wet days. Glad we got to soak up some of that southern California sun!
LOVE these two photos, and it has nothing to do with the bright green wall in the background, haha!
After hanging around town, we took a quick drive to Paseo Miramar, a beautiful hiking trail overlooking Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean. So. Pretty. This location has extra special meaning, because its is one of Claire and Doug’s favorite hikes AND it is where they got engaged!
I love Claire in this one. 🙂
Check out this view, I mean, COME ON! It’s no wonder they like it so much!
The sun was setting fast, so we headed out to the beach to take some quick photos in front of the Santa Monica Pier. It was kind of perfect because we were able to get some amazing sunset photos!
Doug and Claire, we had soooooo much fun, and we are BEYOND excited to shoot your wedding in Chicago next year! Thanks for showing us some of your favorite spots!
Ian and Emma are absolute dolls! I could seriously listen to them talk all day because their British accents are so darn cute. When we met up with them in San Francisco for their engagement session, they were both so excited to get started and they were so much fun all evening. Emma and Ian are moving to SF soon, so taking some photos around their favorite spots in the City by the Bay was perfect.
We met up at Coit Tower for some pretty nature and awesome views.
So in love. 🙂
Our next stop was at Fisherman’s Wharf which was full of people, energy and color! Always a good combo.
Love this aqua wall!
These two just make my heart melt.
Finally, we headed out to the ever-gorgeous Crissy Field for some shots with the beach and the iconic bridge. We spotted this cute little caterpillar while we were there!
Emma and Ian, you two are simply awesome and just plain sweet! We are excited for your wedding just around the corner!
We love Greg and Amy! Their wedding up at Forest House Lodge was just a joy to be a part of. One thing I love about weddings is learning even more about the couple through the voices of their loved ones and Greg and Amy’s wedding was filled with great stories, kind words and lots of love. There will be much goodness to share when we post the whole wedding, including their awesome wedding invitation design!
